How to Get Around Sri Lanka as a Tourist - The best ways to explore the land!

published on 25 August 2022

Sri Lanka is a relatively easy country to explore. The public transport system offers connectivity throughout the island. There are plenty of other means of travel, such as car rentals and tuk-tuks, to help you get about and discover the island. Read on to gather some tips and tricks to traverse the pearl of the Indian Ocean.

Trains

Trains are the best way to travel across the country; you will get to hang out with the pleasant locals and explore the beautiful vistas from the wide-open carriage doors! Trains are well-connected to most parts of the island and are an economical means of getting about. There is a reserved fully air-conditioned compartment on most long-distance trains; however, these require to be pre-booked. The second class has a reserved and an unreserved deck; you can purchase tickets for the latter on the day of the journey. On the downside, the journey can be slow, with multiple stops along the way. Periodic train workers' strikes can also take place. The train terminal for long distances is in Colombo Fort.

Buses

The bus is perhaps faster and better connected to the island than trains. They are super inexpensive, and if you get a window seat, you are in for a comfortable ride. The intercity service is a bit more expensive but faster and airconditioned. With fewer stops, you will get to your destination much quicker! The buses are regular, and if you miss one, another one will arrive without having to wait for too long. Buses to the coastal areas leave every 30 minutes and to Kandy every 15 minutes. Pre-booking is not necessary, and tickets are paid for inside the bus.

Car rentals

Renting a car or van would be another fast option. And of course, you have the freedom to travel wherever you want! Air-conditioned and chauffeur-driven vehicles can be arranged via many travel agencies. If, however, you feel comfortable enough and have the necessary authorisation, rent a vehicle such as a car, motorbike, or scooter to explore the country on your own. Traffic in Colombo can be very hectic and chaotic. But once you move out of the cities, driving will be a pleasure! Do keep in mind, that the traffic drives on the left-hand side of the road!

Tuk Tuks

Tuk Tuks, also called trishaws or three-wheelers, are perhaps the local favorite to get from point A to B, typically shorter distances. They are widely available, practically in every town on the island except in very remote villages. Make sure to get into a metered taxi; if not they may charge exorbitant amounts, especially from tourists. If the taxi doesn't have a meter, bargain the fee before getting in. Sometimes even locals can get overcharged if you don't declare a price from the beginning.

Taxis

Taxis are found in different places in the country such as the Fort area and near the International Airport. An official taxi has yellow toppers with red and white license plates. Usually, a meter is in place, if not, fix a price before getting it. The driver may expect a 10% service tip as well. There are private cab companies from which you can arrange a taxi to meet you at a specific location. Uber is popular, as well as the local app 'Pickme' – these are safe options when getting about in Colombo, particularly at night. You can also request your place of stay to organize transport from the airport and even ask for some options for long-distance travel in Sri Lanka. Resorts may even have their private cars available for hire or will recommend places that do. Among some of the best to consider are properties offered by the likes of Browns Hotels & Resorts.
